It's an interesting question and one I've been thinking about a bit in the last little while as we had a wonderful influx of newer players into our corp. There have been a number of interesting cultural moments with our more sr. members giving newer players **** for not having this or that skill, or telling them of fittings they simply couldn't run due to tech II requirements or just a lack of weapons upgrades V, for example.
I'm worried about that key question of how to keep the game interesting for those of us who've played since release, but still playable for legitimate nublets.
I have to say though, that CCP has done a better job of it than I could have expected. Barges and ice mining, for example, strike me as wonderful things. A player who is training up skills and looking to make some money can mine ice in relative safety and with modest skills. Sure, they can't fly a Covetor, but the Retriever is still a crap-load more affordable than a BS for mining, and more effective and manageable than a mining cruisers.
OFC, as I've heard many times, eve's primary appeal is it's PvP, some say the best of many current MMPOGs. And there I have to admit, veterans 4tw. It's not just that uber skills allow for tech II guns and betting fitting abilities, it's also that a veteran has that huge array of tactical knowledge and game mechanics tidbits that the newer player does not.
I honestly don't think there's much of a fix for that in 1 vs. 1 combat, but then, really, how often does 1 vs. 1 combat even come up anymore :(
And then, what keeps us experiened players interested? TBH it's outposts ATM. If outposts hadn't been introduced I'm honestly not sure how interested my more experienced m8s would be. Having SOME kind of goal to work for gives a sense of purpose to games that otherwise seem to have very little. Maybe if we had a better storyline and such we'd have something to keep our interest other than the next "thing" but that's kinda futile talking about after a couple of years, that sort of externally imposed storyline doesn't seem to be CCP's thing, except piecemeal or as a retroactive justification for needed/planned nerfs or content changes.
